Aerodrome on Base: LP emissions, veAERO votes and incentives
How Aerodrome's ve(3,3) model pays LPs in AERO, pays voters in fees and incentives, and locks tokens as NFTs, and how teams record each flow.
What this means for you: an Aerodrome position can generate four different flows: AERO emissions to staked LPs, trading fees and outside incentives to voters, rebases to lockers, and the lock itself. Each needs its own recognition policy, and the locked position is an NFT, which changes how US GAAP scope and disclosures work.
The moving parts
Aerodrome runs on Base and works in weekly epochs that start at midnight UTC each Thursday [1]. Liquidity providers deposit tokens into a pool and receive LP tokens. They then choose: keep the LP tokens unstaked and earn the pool's trading fees, or stake them in the pool's gauge and give up those fees in exchange for a share of AERO emissions [1]. The fees given up by staked LPs are passed to voters [1].
Voters are holders of veAERO, created by locking AERO in the VotingEscrow contract for up to four years. Voting power decays over time as the lock approaches expiry, unless the lock is made permanent [1]. Each epoch, veAERO holders vote to direct the next round of emissions to particular pools [1].
Voters earn two kinds of reward for the pools they vote for. Fee rewards are the trading fees from that pool; fees earned in one epoch are paid to that pool's voters in the next [1]. Incentive rewards, often called bribes, are tokens that outside parties deposit to attract votes, limited to whitelisted tokens [1]. Separately, a rewards distributor pays rebases to lockers based on their locked AERO [1].
Emissions started at 15 million AERO per epoch, falling 1 percent a week, and later move to a tail rate set as a percentage of circulating supply that governance can adjust [1]. A veAERO position is an ERC-721 NFT: it can be transferred, merged with another or split, but the underlying AERO cannot be withdrawn until the lock expires [1].
The Aero merger
In November 2025 Dromos Labs, the team behind Aerodrome and Velodrome, announced plans to merge the two exchanges into a single platform called Aero, with expansion to Ethereum mainnet; CoinDesk reported in January 2026 a target of the second quarter of 2026 [2]. We could not confirm from official protocol channels the final migration status as of October 2026. If your treasury holds AERO, VELO or ve positions, confirm the current contract addresses and any token conversion before closing the period, and treat a conversion as an event that needs its own policy.
Recognition: common approaches
No standard setter has written guidance for ve-style rewards, so each flow is a policy choice anchored in general principles.
- LP emissions: most teams recognize AERO as income at fair value when it is claimable and under the entity's control, and that value becomes the token's basis.
- Fee and incentive rewards: these are paid after the epoch ends and are usually recognized when claimable, at the fair value of each token received. Incentives from third parties are payments for voting, so many teams present them separately from trading-fee income.
- Rebases: rebases offset dilution from new emissions and are credited to the lock. Some entities recognize them as income when credited; others treat them as additional units at zero basis until the lock can be withdrawn. This is unsettled.
- The lock itself: moving AERO into veAERO is usually treated as a reclassification to a restricted holding, not a disposal, because the entity keeps the right to the same AERO at expiry.
For US tax, the closest IRS guidance is Revenue Ruling 2023-14, which says a cash-method taxpayer includes proof-of-stake validation rewards in income at fair market value when the taxpayer gains dominion and control [3]. That ruling is about validation rewards, not voting incentives or LP emissions, so applying it here is an analogy, not a rule. For UK individuals and trustees, draft rules would treat entering and leaving liquidity pools with the same type of token as no gain, no loss from 6 April 2027; companies are not covered, and the draft does not address reward tokens [5].
US GAAP scope and disclosure
ASU 2023-08 applies only to fungible crypto assets that, among other conditions, do not give enforceable rights to underlying assets [4]. Liquid AERO is a likely candidate for fair value through net income. A veAERO position is a non-fungible token wrapping locked AERO, so it likely fails the fungibility test and needs a scope conclusion of its own. Where AERO itself is in scope but subject to a lock, the standard requires disclosure of contractual sale restrictions [6].

Operational traps
- Votes reset each epoch. If no one re-votes, the position stops earning voter rewards.
- Rewards accrue per pool and per token, so a single claim can bring in many small, illiquid tokens. Price them at claim and screen for spam-like incentives.
- Staked LP tokens sit in the gauge contract, not your wallet. Balance checks must read the gauge.
- veAERO can be transferred as an NFT, so custody and signing controls should cover it like any other asset.
What to do
- Write one policy line each for emissions, fee rewards, incentives, rebases and locks.
- Track every veAERO token ID, its lock end date and whether it is permanent.
- Record the epoch and pool for each reward claim so income can be traced to votes.
- Reach a documented ASU 2023-08 scope view on veAERO and disclose sale restrictions on locked AERO.
- Confirm the status of the Aero merger and any token conversion before period end.
