Crypto on the balance sheet: fair value (US GAAP) vs cost (IFRS)
ASU 2023-08 flipped US GAAP to fair value. IFRS still says intangible. The same coin, two rulebooks.
The old problem
For years, US companies carried crypto as an indefinite-lived intangible asset at cost-less-impairment. You wrote the asset down when its price fell below cost, but you could never write it back up when the price recovered — so balance sheets systematically understated holdings, and a good year barely showed.
What ASU 2023-08 changed (US GAAP)
In December 2023 the FASB issued ASU 2023-08. In-scope crypto assets are now measured at fair value, with changes recognized in net income each reporting period — not in other comprehensive income. It is effective for all entities for fiscal years beginning after December 15, 2024, including interim periods, with early adoption permitted. Scope is deliberately narrow: it excludes wrapped tokens, most stablecoins, NFTs, and issuer-affiliated tokens, which fall back to the legacy model.
Where IFRS still stands
There is no IFRS equivalent to ASU 2023-08. Under the IFRS Interpretations Committee's June 2019 agenda decision, a cryptocurrency is neither cash nor a financial instrument. By default it is an intangible asset under IAS 38 — held at cost less impairment, or under the revaluation model where an active market exists (with revaluation gains going to OCI, not profit). If the holder trades crypto in the ordinary course of business, IAS 2 inventory applies instead.
Why it matters
The same token can hit a US and an IFRS income statement on completely different schedules: US GAAP now marks it to market through P&L, while IFRS keeps it at cost (with any revaluation sitting in equity). Groups that report under both need one immutable ledger that can re-project the same events under each standard — which is exactly the problem Deciphr is built to solve.
